The formidable Mary Clark Thompson, who constructed Sonnenberg Gardens as her summer home with her husband in 1885, had many pets, including white peacocks. What a wonderful, artistic, free-spirited woman she must have been—a woman after my own heart!

Experiencing unforgettable sights like this is one of the reasons I love traveling. After dinner my friend and I walked around the Old Town in Dubrovnik and caught this magnificent view down by the sea. The color and power of this scene was so dramatic, I had to paint it in the studio as soon as I returned.

This house caught my eye one day, as I drove on a back road in the middle of winter. I pulled over to do a small plein air painting in the moment, and couldn’t wait to do a studio piece. The shadows on the snow and bits of autumn color in the landscape created a complex composition I had so much fun recreating.

The Treasures Collection
A limited set of custom-framed, original oil paintings being sold alongside the item that inspired them!
The color and shape of this pot are what originally caught my eye as I meandered through an estate sale in Canandaigua, NY, but the story I imagined for it is what caused me to take it home. This garlic pot immediately transports me into the kitchen of an Italian nonna, making her Sunday sauce for the family and adding some fresh garlic to it from this pot. In reality, it was the perfect accompaniment in my kitchen as it matched my accent color, and on a daily basis it reminds me of the joy, love, and art of preparing a meal.

This small but mighty sewing basket has done much more than carry my thread and scissors -- it’s also served as a reminder that art is rooted all around us. While I don’t know the history of this basket that I bought at an auction in the Rochester, NY area, I imagine a young woman weaving it by hand, taking special care to craft it sturdily and then add the soft painting to the top. The detail is awe-inspiring.

My dad was an avid bird lover. He was also the type to pull over on a long drive home if he saw any sort of yard sale or auction going on, just to look around. When I saw this birdhouse in an antique shop in the Adirondacks, I immediately imagined its creator being friends with my dad, eager to create a beautiful home for birds who need a rest from a long day of flying. I’ve kept it on the top shelf of a cupboard housing many of my treasures, where it constantly reminds me of the connection to and love I have for nature and its inhabitants.

When I stumbled upon this basket at Constable Auction House in the Adirondacks in the ‘80s, I imagined a woman carrying it onto a train, packed with her essential belongings, and without a specific destination in mind. In its lifetime with me, I’ve used it to carry art supplies, store sketchpads, complete still life set ups for my paintings, and, of course, to pack a small picnic lunch on a sunny day. I’ve loved this basket for its utility (its soft leather handles are so gentle!), but also for its feminine artistry and the energy put into the details. What might it carry for you?
